Water-resistant recessed LED light demonstrating ingress protection from moisture
Product IP ratings should be verified against the manufacturer’s installation specifications.

Illuminating a modern living room. Adding elegance to a bathroom. Or highlighting architectural details in an outdoor garden. Every space deserves beautiful lighting, but not every fixture is designed for the same environment.

That’s where IP ratings make the difference.

At MEGAPLAN,we believe choosing the right lighting goes beyond design and brightness. Understanding how well a fixture is protected against dust and water is essential for performance, safety, and long-term reliability.

What Does an IP Rating Really Mean?

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating indicates how well a lighting fixture’s enclosure resists solid objects and water under defined test conditions.

It’s expressed using two numbers, such as IP20, IP44, or IP65.

  • The first digit measures protection against solid objects and dust, ranging from 0 to 6.
  • The second digit measures protection against water, ranging from 0 to 9.

For solid protection, level 2 guards against finger-sized objects, level 4 against objects larger than 1 mm, level 5 provides dust protection, and level 6 means dust-tight.

For water protection, level 4 resists splashes, level 5 water jets, level 6 powerful water jets, level 7 temporary immersion, and level 8 continuous immersion under specified conditions.

A rating of 0 indicates no rated protection for that particular category.

For example, an IP65 light is dust-tight and protected against water jets, making it suitable for many exposed outdoor applications when properly installed.

From IP20 to IP68: Choosing the Right Protection

Different environments require different levels of protection. A spotlight in a dry interior doesn’t face the same conditions as a garden fixture exposed to rain and dust.

Here’s a quick guide:

IP RatingProtectionTypical Application
IP20Finger-sized objects; no water protectionDry indoor spaces
IP44Small solid objects and water splashesSuitable bathroom locations and sheltered areas
IP54Dust-protected and splash-resistantSemi-outdoor and selected technical spaces
IP65Dust-tight and water-jet-resistantExposed outdoor walls and façades
IP67Dust-tight and temporary immersion-resistantSuitable in-ground lighting installations
IP68Dust-tight and continuous immersion-resistantSpecified underwater applications

These are general application examples. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications, installation conditions, and applicable electrical requirements.

Two IP Ratings, One Fixture: What You Should Know

Not every lighting fixture has the same protection level on every side.

This is particularly important for recessed downlights, where manufacturers may specify two different ratings, such as IP65 / IP20.

The visible front of the fixture may offer IP65 protection against dust and water jets, while the rear installation side provides only IP20 protection.

This means the entire fixture is not fully IP65-protected.

If moisture or dust can reach the space above the ceiling, the rear of the luminaire and its electrical connections must also be considered.

Lighting Tip: Always confirm whether an IP rating applies to the complete fixture or only its exposed surface, and follow the specified installation instructions.

How Do You Choose the Right IP Rating?

Warm outdoor decorative garden LED illumination
Outdoor landscape lighting: verify each product’s IP rating and installation requirements.

The ideal protection level depends on where and how your lighting will be installed.

For dry indoor spaces, IP20 may be sufficient. Bathrooms and sheltered exterior areas require closer attention to moisture exposure, while outdoor façades, gardens, and ground-recessed installations may need higher protection.

The key is to consider the actual environment, not simply choose the highest number.

Water jets and immersion involve different test conditions, so an immersion rating alone doesn’t necessarily guarantee resistance to powerful water jets.

With the right combination of fixture design, IP protection, and correct installation, lighting can remain both beautiful and suitable for its environment.

Light Beautifully. Protect Intelligently.

At MEGAPLAN, we believe great lighting should deliver more than visual appeal. It should be thoughtfully selected for the spaces where people live, work, and enjoy.

From elegant indoor spotlights to durable outdoor architectural lighting, choosing the right IP rating helps protect your investment and maintain reliable performance.
